Greetings!

"Take the blue pill or the red pill?  This is your last chance, after that there is no turning back.  You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Remember, all I'm offering is the truth - nothing more."

You may remember this scene, from The Matrix, where Morpheus offers Neo the chance to find "truth." Consumers of assessment information, too, are faced with a choice to "take the blue pill or the red pill."  You can choose to believe the rhetoric about large-scale assessment, often featured in the popular press (the "blue pill"), or find more thoughtful information about the successes and challenges currently faced in large-scale assessment (the "red pill").

We encourage you to "take the red pill" and join us at the Council of Chief State School Officers National Conference on Student Assessment (NCSA), June 25 - 27 at the Hyatt Regency, New Orleans.  Several new consortia-based and state-based assessment programs are being unveiled this year.  NCSA is a good place to learn about them and get involved in the conversation.

We encourage you to connect with us at the conference and to learn more about our work with these assessment efforts.  If you would like to meet at the conference, contact me and let me know.  I also invite you to attend the session I will be participating in, on behalf of ELPA21, on Friday, June 27 at 10:30 am: Are Your Schools Ready for the Next Generation Assessments? What You Need to Know From All 6 State Consortia."

In the meantime, I am sharing some of our recent work in assessment in this special NCSA issue of SEGway. Also, take a look at our website at www.segmeasurement.com, as it is continually updated with developments in the field.  And, feel free to email me at selliot@segmeasurement.com.  I'd love to hear what's on your mind.

Sincerely,
