Dear Hilary,

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our readers, customers and colleagues.  In honor of the holiday, we are sharing some of the things in assessment and efficacy research for which we are thankful.

In this issue, we also share some of what's new at SEG Measurement; we have a number of interesting new projects to share with you.  We are proud of the work we do and our recent expansion into new areas such as workplace assessment and our introduction of additional cost-effective models for evaluating product and service efficacy may be of interest.

The December conference season is almost here and we are looking forward to meeting with our colleagues in Early Childhood and our colleagues in Educational Technology in just a few weeks.  Please take a look at our upcoming conference attendance plans and let us know if you are attending any of these so we can meet and learn more about your work in the education marketplace.

Take a look at our website at www.segmeasurement.com, as it is continually updated with developments in the field.  And, feel free to email me at selliot@segmeasurement.com.  I'd love to hear what's on your mind.

Sincerely,

Scott Signature

Things in Assessment & Efficacy Research for Which We Are Thankful

Our Clients and Customers-  We consider ourselves very lucky to have worked with more than 70 different organizations and their staff to complete more than 100 projects in assessment and research.  We truly appreciated our clients' trust and confidence in us.

Growth in Emphasis on Evidence-Based Education-  We are grateful that schools are placing greater emphasis on using solutions and interventions that are based on clear evidence of effectiveness.  We are firmly committed to providing students with instructional tools and services that are proven effective.

Improvements in Assessment Technology-  We are appreciative of the steady improvement in assessment technology over the past 10 years.  When we look back on the past decade, it is rewarding to see the development of computer delivered and adaptive assessments, greater reliance on stronger psychometric models (e.g., IRT), greater recognition of the value of formative assessment and the introduction of more sophisticated assessments into the state and local assessment arena.

Greater Recognition of the Value of Feedback from Assessments-  While recognition of the value of feedback is not new, we are pleased to see that the well-known principles of feedback are making their way more aggressively into the daily fabric of education.  Enhanced assessments and better data systems are, thankfully, fostering greater use of assessment-based feedback in the school environment.

A Thirty-Seven Year Career in Assessment and Research-  On a personal note, I am very thankful that I have had thirty-seven years to help schools, governments and other organizations develop high quality assessments and conduct high quality research.  And, I am appreciative of my family putting up with my spending way too much time on my work in assessment and research.

SEG has worked with many educational publishers and technology providers, from start-ups to the largest industry players, to develop high quality assessment programs and conduct sound efficacy research.  Please contact us to discuss your needs.  Email us or call us at 800.254 7670 ext. 102.

What's New at SEG
New Projects and an Expanded Focus

  • Efficacy of Formative Reading Assessments-  It is widely recognized that formative assessment can play a significant role in the development of students' reading skills.   SEG is proud to be working with a leading provider of online, K-12 reading instruction to evaluate the efficacy of an innovative, new formative reading assessment.

  • Collaboration Assessment- The ability to collaborate effectively can be the difference between success and failure at school and in the workplace.  SEG is pleased to be working with a new client to develop an effective measure of collaboration skills to evaluate workplace collaboration skills.

  • Critical Thinking Research- There is increasing interest in the development of critical thinking skills.  Critical thinking is an important skill for both career and college success.  SEG will be working with a group of regional schools to evaluate the growth in students' critical thinking skills attributable to a STEM based Professional Development program for teachers.

  • Supply Chain Management Skills Assessment-  Most modern businesses depend on an effective product supply chain.  Developing and maintaining an effective supply chain requires a very specific set of skills.  SEG is excited to be working with a leading Management Consulting firm to develop measures of supply chain management skills including Purchasing and Pricing.
